AHA Centre program trains future leaders in disaster management

April 21, 2015

To help meet the requirements for future leaders of disaster management, the AHA Centre has initiated a comprehensive six-month executive training program, known as the ACE Programme (AHA Centre Executive Program). Activities range from academic, in-class training to field visits, and include a series of on-the-job-training modules, including an introduction to and practice in the use of the Disaster Monitoring and Response System (DMRS) housed at the AHA Centre in Jakarta, Indonesia.

AHA Centre’s Disaster Monitoring and Analysis team, Janggam Adhityawarma and Andy Musaffa, facilitated a recent DMRS training session that included having students from the multi-national group provide presentations on the utilization of DMRS for their country. The presentations demonstrated the use of valuable information such as climate and weather conditions, potential storm tracks, estimated impacts from extreme winds, rainfall, or storm surge, as well as combining DMRS information with the respective national agencies, such as meteorological or seismic departments.

Participant Fauzie Ismail of Malaysia commented, “The training was very useful as it has broaden our perspective on weather monitoring since previously I focus on our own data to predict impacts from the weather. But after being exposed to DMRS, I can get a bigger and more global picture in weather hazards around our country.”

The ACE Programme is open for all ASEAN Member States (Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Viet Nam) particularly for participants coming from national disaster management offices (NDMO). Currently the ACE Programme is commencing its second training session, which will run from February to August 2015.
