External Events Notification System

INTERNATIONAL ATOMIC ENERGY AGENCY (IAEA)

IAEA and PDC have just begun development of a one-of-a-kind system called the External Events Notification System (EENS) to enhance IAEA’s natural hazard early warning and monitoring capabilities. The EENS will be powered by PDC’s DisasterAWARE platform and help continuously assess the level of natural hazard risk posed to nuclear facilities. It will also aid IAEA Member States with a better understanding of external risks to facilities and help harden resilience against future catastrophes. Learn more…

GOVERNMENT OF THAILAND

ThaiAWARE was among the earliest of systems to be deployed by PDC for national use. Designed in collaboration with Thailand’s National Disaster Warning Center (NDWC), ThaiAWARE is powered by PDC’s DisasterAWARE and supports state-of-the-art capabilities at the NDWC’s central operations center. GOVERNMENT OF PHILIPPINES

After years of collaboration to assess and reduce disaster risk and increase hazard mapping capacity, PDC and the Government of the Philippines kicked off a new project in 2019 to develop a unique version of DisasterAWARE. The PhilAWARE system, currently being used in beta by the nation’s Office of Civil Defense, is enhancing the nation’s ability to contend with a very high natural hazard risk profile as well as plan for the increase in climate-driven disasters. GOVERNMENT OF INDONESIA

Launched in partnership between PDC and Indonesia’s national disaster management organization Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana, the InAWARE system has been operational since 2013. Its use has been institutionalized across sectors since its deployment—intersecting with public and academic groups which provide crowd-sourced and mapped data for response, as well as national and provincial offices. It has been used operationally to respond to earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, volcanic eruptions, and has supported national and provincial training and exercises. Learn more…

ASSOCIATION OF SOUTHEAST ASIAN NATIONS (ASEAN)

The ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance (AHA Centre) has been working with PDC since its inception and initial opening in 2011. In collaboration with ASEAN, PDC developed a regional early warning, disaster monitoring, and decision support system for the AHA Centre which is powered by its DisasterAWARE platform. The Disaster Monitoring and Response System (DMRS) was deployed for operational use in 2012 and facilitates joint disaster relief and emergency response operations by the 10 member states of ASEAN today. 2004 INDIAN OCEAN TSUNAMI

On Dec. 26, 2004, in the early morning hours, a staggering 9.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia—ripping across the Indian Ocean and uplifting the seafloor beneath it by several meters. The displacement of water above the sea floor unleashed a massive tsunami—the deadliest in recorded history.

PDC begins development of the custom Disaster Monitoring and Response System (DMRS) for the AHA Centre, powered by its flagship DisasterAWARE platform.

2012-2013: DMRS Development and Deployment

Requirements gathering for the new DMRS takes place, with continuous stakeholder engagement leading up to final deployment on January 10, 2013.
