Tropical Storm Guillermo is moving past by the Hawaiian Islands, and is expected to weaken over the next 48 hours. The latest Central Pacific Hurricane Center (CPHC) advisory (6 August 2100UTC) has Guillermo passing about 60 miles north of Maui late today, 20 miles north of Oahu tonight, and near Kauai on Friday morning (local time). Guillermo is still expected to bring some wind and rain to the islands, and ocean swells associated with the storm will continue to produce large, life threatening surf along east facing shores of the main islands today.
As Guillermo passes, monitoring around the islands begins to focus on the newly formed Tropical Storm Hilda, which may approach Hawaii next week. According to CPHC, Hilda is expected to cross the 140º West Longitude line into their area of responsibility early Saturday morning.
Pacific Disaster Center urges everyone in Hawaii to remain alert and keep informed as the events unfold. Continue to listen to authorities, and take the necessary precautions to stay safe before an event occurs. We will continue to monitor these events and help share information and develop products that can support decision making.
